Consultations

Two Year Old

If you are concerned about your two year old's language development, we have a one hour screening process that will assess your child's communication skills through observation and parent interview. To begin the session the therapist will meet with the parent to get background information about the child. The therapist will then spend 15 - 20 minutes observing the child interacting with the parent. The therapist will analyze your child's interaction skills, gesture skills, receptive language (comprehension), expressive language (verbal), and pragmatics (social use of language). During the last half of the consultation the therapist will share her observations and explain whether your child's language development is within the appropriate range. She will also demonstrate language stimulation techniques and provide the family with written suggestions for home language skills.

This is a consultation and is NOT designed to replace a formal language evaluation.

Individualized Education Program (IEP) Consultation

We can help you with your upcoming IEP. CSTC can guide you through the IEP process and make sure that you understand your parental rights. We can also provide a clinical opinion of your child's present level of language performance. We can review the goals and objectives provided by the school before the IEP meeting and give you input on whether they are appropriate for your child. If they are found deficient we can provide suggestions on more appropriate goals.

A CSTC therapist can also attend the IEP meeting if you would like a professional to help advocate for your child's language goals in the academic setting.

Professional Presentations

We provide professional presentations describing normal language development to:

  • New Mothers' Groups
  • Day Care Centers
  • Preschools

Topics for these presentations are tailored to each group and can include; early awareness of comunicative signals, techniques for expanding vocalizations, and early warning signs of language problems. There is time incorporated for a question and answer session with the therapist as well.
