Socialites

The focus of this group will be to incorporate stories, crafts/cooking activities and games in order to facilitate functional social interaction, problem solving and abstract thinking.

Each session will include a story, an arts & craft or cooking activity and a game if there is time.

Storytelling will be used as an avenue to help the kids in improving their abstract language and problem solving skills.  During the storytelling activity, kids will be asked to examine the story within the boundaries of "wh”-questions- who, what, where, when, why and how. As the students answer the questions, they will increase their understanding of story grammar- including characters, setting, problem, solution, conclusion.

During the arts & craft/cooking activity, the kids will be implementing their social and problem solving skills in real life situations. The speech therapist (s) will act as the facilitator and the kids will work together, share their ideas, ask a peer for materials/help and listen to others in order to complete an activity successfully in a group situation.

Literacy Lab

Does your child have difficulty with reading and spelling?  Do they read slowly, or skip and guess at words?  Do they have an average IQ, but are still reading below grade level?  If so, this class may be for them.

The ability to read (and comprehend) material depends upon rapid recognition and decoding of single words.  Most people with a reading disability demonstrate a core deficit in phonological processing, resulting in difficulty in single word decoding.

Incorporating techniques from the research-based Wilson Reading System, your child will be taught how to accurately and fluently decode single words.  Using a multi-sensory, interactive approach, your child will be taught skills including letter-to-sound correlation, phoneme segmentation, sound blending, and word/syllable segmentation.

Age:  6 to 8 years old

Days:  Tuesday and Thursday, Ashburn, VA

Time: 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

June 30 – August 6, 2008  (6-Weeks)

Cost:  $450.00

* Also includes Open Playgroup Time (OPT) in KiDazzles Gym after classes and on Fridays

** This camp CANNOT be billed to insurance as therapy

Happy Hour with Ms. Meghan

CSTC’s Happy Hour will feature a mix of our most popular social language groups from the Fall.  Each day Ms. Meghan will lead the kids through a fun filled hour focusing on developing better communication and socialization.  Daily activities will include but aren’t limited to:

Story Time - This will be a slight twist from a 'typical' story time to make it more fun for our kids. We will "break down" stories to maintain attention and maximize comprehension. We will practice answering wh-questions, predicting what might happen next, and retelling stories.  As always, we will work on waiting for turns, eye contact, appropriate volume, and participating in group activities.

Craft Time - Children will complete a simple craft activity. Making the craft will involve following sequential directions and sharing materials.  We will also target requesting, answering questions, and of course, peer interaction!

Game Time - Children will work on playing simple games (e.g. Bingo, Candyland) until completion, sharing materials, and following directions. We will work on peer interaction and turn-taking, as well as winning and losing graciously.

Days: Monday – Tuesday – Wednesday - Thursday

Time: 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

June 30 - August 21, 2008

Today's Kindergarten curriculum has high expectations of our children.  For Kindergarteners to succeed they must be prepared with basic skills. CSTC and KiDazzles offer language-based curriculums for young children with and without speech/language delays. The goal is to provide a strong foundation for learning. Our curriculums include: Letter and Number Recognition, Color and Shape Identification, Basic Reading, and much more!

Kindergarten Readiness Boot Camp

Welcome to Kindergarten Boot Camp.  This camp was designed to offer your child a high concentration of Pre-K skills.  Our main goal is to ease the transition process for your child into Kindergarten. We believe a structured small group approach is the ideal environment to focus on skills that are required.  This preschool program has several key components: communication skills, academics, motor development and behavior.  Within these domains we will incorporate these thru academic activities, story time, music movement, and art.  In our approach we will work on all key components and not focus on only one area. The skills that will be taught are interdependent upon each other for appropriate child development.  Our philosophy is that learning cannot occur without a proper behavior plan that can be used in a consistent manner at home, as well as in the classroom.  We will emphasize our classroom rules on a daily basis with handouts to be shared with the parents to reinforce positive behavior throughout the day.  Social scripts and visuals will be used to teach and reinforce skills.  A pre and post survey of skills will be done to evaluate the child's progress during these 12 sessions.  Parents will be encouraged to assist their child at home in a variety of daily activities.

The following is a brief list of academic skills that will be reinforced:

  • Letter recognition & sounds
  • Basic colors
  • 1 to 1 correspondence up to 10
  • Counting to 20
  • Sorting by color, size, & shape
  • Look at pictures and tell a story
  • Talk in a 5 to 6 word sentence
  • Play cooperatively with peers
  • Attend to activities until complete
  • Listen to stories without interruption
  • Waiting for his/her turn during group activities
  • Catch & throw ball, bounce ball
  • Write first name
  • Develop pincer grasp
  • Concepts: special, quantity & time

Each child will receive an Individual Play Plan, daily feedback and a progress report at the end of the camp.  Each camp will also have online social stories that cover each week’s activities.
