A speech and language evaluation is performed in order to gain insight regarding your child's speech and language skills within the context of his or her total development.

 

Standardized tests, observational scales, and parental input are used in order to gather information about your child's communication skills. Evaluations are used in order to assess some or all of the following:

• Receptive language - what a child understands

• Expressive language - what a child communicates

• Social language (i.e., pragmatics)

• Vocabulary

• Oral motor skills

• Speech articulation

• Fluency

• Auditory processing

• Phonological awareness

An evaluation is scheduled for 60 minutes.  During the evaluation the will go over your child's medical history and your concerns.  The therapist will then perform the appropriate testing which will typically include an articulation test and an oral mechanism evaluation. A general language sample is also collected to determine your child's language abilities.
